Cool times in hot month at Natick Senior Center

Stay cool in August at the Natick Senior Center with activities that include an ice cream social and chilling through sound.

Here is a sampling of activities:

Ice cream social, Aug. 4, 2:30 p.m. Enjoy different flavors of ice cream, great company, and music from DJ Ray Black. Come relax, socialize, and celebrate summer with us.


Medicare 101 Aug.  5, 1 p.m.  Join us for a Medicare 101 educational meeting hosted by the MetroWest SHINE program. This presentation is an overview of Medicare for people turning 65 or those just signing up for Medicare. We will be discussing Medicare enrollment as well as information about the parts of Medicare and coverage options.


Exploring care and support services, Aug. 6, 1:30 p.m.

Planning for care needs can feel overwhelming but you don’t have to navigate it alone. In Exploring Care and Support Services, part of the Alzheimer’s Association Empowered Caregiver series, you’ll learn about different types of care, when and how to plan for changes, and what to consider when transitioning between care settings. This program provides practical guidance to help caregivers make informed, confident decisions. This program will be held in-person at the Natick Community Senior Center, as well as virtually. Pins and pastries, Aug. 10, 2 p.m. Join us for a sweet spin on bowling fun. Enjoy a lively game of mini bowling followed by delicious pastries and warm conversation. Whether you roll a strike or just come for the treats, this relaxed and friendly gathering is the perfect way to share laughs, snacks, and a little friendly competition. Come ready to roll and enjoy.


Sound healing, Aug. 11, 10:15 a.m. $15.

Discover the power of sound in a soothing 75-minute session of gentle movement and immersive vibrations. Join Leo Ryan for a relaxing practice where you simply settle in and let sound wash over you. Bring a yoga mat, and a pillow or blanket for extra comfort.


Quieting the mind: Tools & strategies for reducing stress in a complex world, Aug. 11, 11 a.m.  Laila Vehvilainen, MS, MPH, CPT Geriatric Case Manager for JFS and Senior Fitness Specialist, will provide practical tips and strategies to reduce stress through cognitive behavioral, movement and meditation. The presentation will include a discussion of lifestyle changes and demonstrations of stretches, meditation and other strategies for quieting the mind.


Fun with collaging, Aug. 17, 10 a.m. $5. Discover the creative possibilities of collage in this fun and inspiring art class. Combine images, colors, textures, and found materials to design one-of-a-kind artwork while exploring personal expression and artistic techniques. No prior art experience needed.


Lunch with friends, Aug. 19, noon. $7.

Enjoy delicious food and great company. For lunch we will have chicken pot pie. Flaky crust with chicken and vegetables in a creamy sauce, plus dessert. Dine-in only. Lunch is provided by Morse Tavern.

Meaningful connections memory cafe Aug. 20, 11:30 a.m.

Our memory cafe is a welcoming and supportive gathering for individuals with memory loss and their care partners. Join us for companionship, entertainment, resources and a light lunch. We are excited to welcome back Octoband,  a fun, interactive experience that helps connect everyone involved. Bingo, Aug. 24, 12:30 p.m.  Have a blast at Bingo, a drop-in activity open to all. Join us for a fun time with six cards and 10 games for $5. Sponsored by the Friends of the Natick Senior Center


Stay safe at home, a fire & life safety presentation Aug. 25, 1:30 p.m. Join Capt. Justin Mui and Lt. Jeff Libby from the Natick Fire Department for an informative presentation on fire and life safety. Topics will include fire and carbon monoxide alarm safety, home safety tips, and practical steps you can take to help protect yourself and your family. This is an opportunity to learn valuable safety information and ask questions of local fire professionals.


Communicating effectively & responding to dementia-related behaviors, Aug. 27, 1:30 p.m.   Strengthen your ability to connect and respond with confidence. In this Alzheimer’s Association education program, you’ll discover communication strategies for every stage of the disease, learn to recognize and respond to behavior changes, and identify common triggers. The program also helps caregivers understand when additional support may be needed. This program will be held in-person at the Natick Community Senior Center, as well as virtually.
