Frederick Douglass speech to be read June 19 on Natick Common

A speech on slavery and July Fourth written by Frederick Douglass still resonates. Natick Historical Society image

In observance of Juneteenth, The Natick Historical Society and Natick is United will host a community reading of Frederick Douglass’ noted 1852 speech “What is a Slave to the 4th of July” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 19 at the Natick Common.

Historian and Natick resident Brenna Greer will offer an introduction to the speech and facilitate dialogue after. Local drummer Bruno Giles will kick off the event with drumming at 10 a.m.

The Juneteenth celebration continues on Natick Common Saturday, June 20 with the Natick Center Cultural District’s Juneteenth event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will include food by Mig’s Dogs, fun activities and musical performances by Drum Nomads.
